Happy Eid Al-Fitr Al-Mubarak

The first day of the month Shawwal marks the end of fasting of the month of Ramadhan and the first day of the Eid Al-Fitr. This day is subject to the confirmed sighting of the crescent of the new moon (Hilal), the crescent of the month of Shawwal. Once it becomes known that Eid Al-Fitr has arrived, it is recommended to spend the night preceding this day in prayers and adoration.

The Muslims get ready to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, Feast of Fast-Breaking, by thanking the Almighty Who enabled them to fast and to remember the needy and the poor. This is the day that Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'Ala) urges the Muslim who has fasted in the month of Ramadhan with sincerity to ask Him, and He promises to respond. It is also customary on this occasion to give gifts to the members of the family, especially to children.

The Eid Al-Fitr prayers will be begin at 9:00 a.m. on the first day of the month of Shawwal, 1420, January 2000, at the Kufa Center of Islamic Knowledge (KCIK). Breakfast will be served directly after the Khatba. There will be a small Eid gifts for the children. If you have any questions, about the Zakat Al-Fitr, Eid prayers, and the Eid Festival, please contact KCIK. We look Forward To Seeing You There Insha'Allah.

The administration of KCIK and the editors of the AL-KUFA Newsletter express their sincere best wishes with their heartiest felicitation to all Muslims around the world for the day of Eid Al-Fitr Al-Mubarak. We pray to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'Ala) to accept all the efforts of those who reaffirmed their commitment to the Almighty through rigorous prayers and fasting in obedience to His command in the month of Ramadhan. May He also reward them in this world and in the Hereafter according to the best of their deeds, and may He grant them happiness, good health, peace, and contentment. O' Lord, bless us on the day of Eid which Thou hast ordained to be a festival and a day of joy, of gathering, and of congregation for the people of Thy creed, Ameen.

Remembrance of Allah and Pondering on His Creation

[This article is an excerpt from a future book Insha'Allah. The copyright is reserved by the author and this Newsletter. We pray that he will finish this book soon. May the Almighty Lord protect him and reward him for his goodness. He gives success through His mercy to whomsoever of them that works righteousness, Ameen]

The Qur’an reveals that the basis of all life is water (Qur’an 21:30 & 23:18); it speaks of the creation of pairs in plant life as well as animal life, and about the fecundating winds that pollinate (Qur’an 13:3 & 36:36). Long before man conducted scientific explorations into the wild, the Qur’an revealed that all animals and birds also live in communities, much like ourselves. The Qur’an describes the water cycle in nature, and quite amazingly, the creation of milk, as mentioned in Surah Al-Nahl (16:66), from “what is between the digested food and the blood” (the fact that milk is created by such a function through the villi in the intestines was discovered in the twentieth century). This miraculous book also details the stages in the development of a fertilized embryo into a human being, and it explains the balancing of the rotation of the earth with the mountains, among many other truths yet to be discovered.

Indeed, this is the grand object that Islam sets before its true adherents – to conquer self by the remembrance of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala), and to conquer nature by the pursuit of knowledge.
The above verses (Qur’an 13:3; 16:66; 21:30; 23:18; 36:36) then speak of the disgrace and helplessness of the one whom Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) condemns to Hell-fire. This destination is for the wrongdoers who live in ease and revel in the bounties and grace of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) while rejecting His warnings, His commands, and even His existence. Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) says in Surah Al-Waqi’ah (56:41-47), “And those on the left hand; how wretched are those on the left hand! In hot wind and boiling water, and shadow of black smoke, neither cool nor refreshing. Surely they lived before in ease, and they persisted obstinately in supreme wickedness, and they used to say: When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised?” This is a true disgrace, leave aside the torment, and we ask Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) to protect us from it,Ameen. Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) says in Surah Qaf (50:30),“On the day when We say to hell: Art thou filled up? And it will say: Are there any more?” There is no shortage of space in hell, and from what we observe around us, no shortage of people journeying hastily toward it. To this disgraceful end, we are told in other verses in Surah Qaf (50:24-26), are destined “every ungrateful, rebellious one, forbidder of good, exceeder of limits, doubter (one who casts doubts and suspicions), and who sets up another god with Allah.”

As Muslims, we bear witness that we have heard the Nabiy Muhammad [Sallallahu Alayhi (Waalihi) wa salam] calling us to faith, and that we do believe, and we hope that he will intervene for us with Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala)’s permission on the day of resurrection. But when we shamelessly persist in wrongdoing and violating the commands of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala), we should also imagine the disgrace we will bring on ourselves when the Nabiy [Sallallahu Alayhi (Waalihi) wa salam] is called as a witness for us and asked about what he taught us. The Qur’an says in Surah Al-Maidah (5:116-117) that Isa (Alayhi AlSalaam) will be asked if he told his disciples to take him and his mother for two gods beside Allah. And Isa (Alayhi AlSalaam) will reply,“Glory be to Thee! It was not for me to say what I had no right to say. If I had said it, Thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my mind, and I know not what is in Thy mind. Surely Thou art the great Knower of the unseen.” He will then say that he conveyed nothing but what he was commanded to, namely,“Serve Allah, my Lord and your Lord”, and he will declare, “I was a witness of them so long as I was among them, but when Thou didst take me away, Thou wast the Watcher over them. And Thou art Witness of all things.” Nabiy Muhammad [Sallallahu Alayhi (Waalihi) wa salam] said that on the day of resurrection, he himself would be shown some men who had gone against his own teachings. He said that he would then declare what the righteous servant [i.e. Isa (Alayhi AlSalaam)] said, “I was a witness of them so long as I was among them, but when Thou didst take me away, Thou wast the Watcher over them.”

So, reflect and ponder on your creation, and that of the universe, keep up your duty to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala), and seek protection from sin through prayer. As Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) says in Surah Baqarah (2:238),“Guard the prayers, and especially the middle prayer, and stand up devoutly and truly obedient to Allah”. (The middle, or Asr, prayer is explicitly stressed here since it usually comes at a time when man is engrossed with worldly affairs, not coinciding with any natural break in the daily routine.) And then again in Surah Ta-Ha, He says (20:130):“Celebrate the praises of thy Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting, and glorify Him during the hours of the night and parts of the day, that thou mayest be well pleased.”

The verses we first quoted from Surah Ale-Imran conclude by saying,“Our Lord, grant us what Thou hast promised us by Thy messengers, and disgrace us not on the day of Resurrection. Surely, Thou never failest in Thy promise!” If we have any hope to claim this promise of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala), then we must first keep up with the covenant we made with Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) and with His Nabiy [Sallallahu Alayhi (Waalihi) wa salam] when we said, “We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, He is One and has no Partners, and that we bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.” We ask Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’Ala) to forgive us, guide us, establish us, and to join us with the righteous, Ameen.

A large number of requests, through phone calls, letters, and in person, have been received from those who are interested in the AL-KUFA Newsletter, Dawah program, the Prayer Time-Table and also from those who filled the Free Subscription / Cancellation Form for the AL-KUFA Newsletter. Insha'Allah, the Center will continue the prayer time-table for each month in the KCIK’s website. Please share this newsletter as well as other material you receive from us, including the Glorious Qur'an with others, Jazakum Allah Khair.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation to all of you. Because of the large numbers of letters that AL-KUFA has received, we will acknowledge and publish only some of these letters each time, and we are unable to include references due to space limitations. Our purpose of publishing these letters is to (a) make a certain plea known to the public in order that they might respond for the pleasure of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala), (b) make us all aware of certain circumstances, or (c) to share a joyous news as well as to make Dua'as and Prayers for those who are ill or have lost a loved one, and also for the one they have lost. In addition, brothers and sisters who are requesting of us various Islamic materials and messages, please provide us with a full name, postal address, telephone number, and e-mail address. If this is to be sent to an institution, please ensure that the institution will accept such material(s), even if it is just the AL-KUFA Newsletter. Please type your request(s) and sign the paper. Insha'Allah, we will continue sending this newsletter to whoever wishes to receive it. Also, we request readers to let us know their new addresses when they relocate. Thank you brothers and sisters, and may Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) reward all of you. Jazakum Allah Khairan.

AL-KUFA received letters, e-mails faxes and telephone calls. Our special thanks and appreciation to all brothers and sisters who took the time to call the Center with their prayers, support and substance. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) reward them and shower His blessings on all with His protection, Ameen.

They started their letters with the Name of Allah,“BISM-ILLAH-IR-RAHMAN-lR-RAHIM” and their greetings,“Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh”, and they ended their letters with the greeting,“Wa Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh.”
Segment of a letter received from brother Michael in Illinois:

Can you be of help to us this Ramadhan? I am looking for this ayat from the Noble Qur’an that states,“A small evil open up other Highway (or paths).” What surat is this ayat?
Thank you brother. It is Surat An-Nahl 16, Ayat 90. For more specific information, you may look at Surat AlBalad 90, Ayat 4-10.

Segment of a letter received from brother Mehdi in France:

I'm 17, of Algerian origin, living in France. I am at this moment in an international school in the north of France. I have encountered one problem though. I express the desire to study Islamic Theology or Islamic studies (as a major). I do not know the name of the major in particular but I want to study in depth and to a high degree what defines my nature of being: Islam, as to develop and complete my search of Knowledge as an individual. To complete my education, I would like to take a world-religion course, learn my native language Arabic and take other courses like communication and art (because I would also like to pursue this class, as I have discovered Allah, Glory to Him, Who has blessed me with specific skills). It was obviously difficult to identify a list of colleges that could provide such expectancies.

In my search for various colleges, I did not find a university that provides this major that only offers Islam as a class from the world-religion major. This is why I write to you. As a Muslim Institution or Organization, I would like to know if you could help me in my research, by sending me a list of Universities that to your knowledge could fulfill these requirements. Thank you very much, may His Peace, Blessings and Mercy be unto you.

Thank you.  You might also wish to surf the world-wide-webs to seek this information by browsing through the programs of several universities as well as searching for Islamic programs. Any individual or institution who can help our brother by sending him information about colleges and universities to study Islam, please do s. We pray that Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) help us find a solution to our need. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) bless us and keep us steadfast in our good deeds, Ameen.

We are very grateful to all sources that sent us publications, their communications about Islam, Muslim community affairs, and educational articles, and to many individuals and institutions in the United States and abroad. These publications are inventoried in the KUFA Public Library and some have been mailed to our brothers and sisters in the prisons and other places.
In addition, our thanks to all brothers and sisters who took the time to write or call KCIK, and informed us about the change of their addresses or their desire to receive the AL-KUFA Newsletter. And the believing men and women, they are guardians of one another; they enjoin good and forbid evil and they establish (regular) prayer and pay the poor-rate and obey Allah and His Nabiy (Muhammad). Allah will bestow on them His mercy; Verily Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.” 5:55-56

May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) bless you all, give you courage and provide you with resources to continue your support. Any donation, small or large, will Insha’Allah be accounted for in this life and in the Hereafter. This would help bring the Muslims together and spread the Word of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala), as our brothers and sisters would find a place of worship wherever they travel. We Need Your Support

The Kufa Center of Islamic Knowledge is entirely dependent on your financial contributions. The AL-KUFA Newsletter especially needs your support to cover its monthly costs. So, please share with us a fair contribution for this newsletter to enable it to continue. In addition, we receive a large number of requests for the AL-KUFA Newsletter. If you don't receive the AL-KUFA Newsletter, it is only because we don't have enough funds to cover the costs, especially for overseas shipping including Canada. [Note to our brothers and sisters in prison: please check with your institutions if you did receive the AL-KUFA Newsletter, and if you received it, then please share it with other brothers and/or sisters. We included the previous issues of the AL-KUFA Newsletter with our parcel to prison libraries. Those in any prison who haven’t received their packages including a copy of the Glorious Qur’an, please request your chaplain and/or any representative of that facility to contact the Center, and Insha’Allah, we will be able to send it. Also, as part of Dawah program, brothers and sisters who would like to have someone visit them and/or call them on the telephone (for about 20 minutes) to talk about Islam, please request the chaplain/officer of that institution to contact the KCIK. We can arrange (at our expense) for people to call specific individuals, or to call a group of Muslims over a speaker phone, at an appointed time to provide lessons or answer questions on Islam, Insha’Allah.

In addition, it is our responsibility to bring to your attention, our dear readers, that we are in desperate need for a place to teach and in need of resources {Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, and other Islamic books}. Islamic newsletters, Bulletin of Affiliation, Islamic magazines, newspapers and other Islamic materials were received from many Islamic institutions.

Copies of Islamic Arabic material were received from the donations of Islamic Foundation. Any donation (s) will aid us in our Dawah program as well as benefit the KUFA Public Library. Insha'Allah, many individuals and publishers will participate in this Dawah program. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) reward you for your efforts and enable you to do good deeds in this life and bless you and your family in this world and in the Hereafter.

Our special thanks to those who visited the Center and/or borrowed books and other material. O’ Lord increase our knowledge and guide all of us to the right path, Ameen. We request donations to aid us in our Dawah program as well as for the KUFA Public Library. Thank you, and may Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) reward you with goodness.

For the pleasure of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala), we therefore request you to assist us financially or materially in all of our programs. We particularly request you to bring this plea to the attention of your community, and encourage them to donate their Islamic charities to this cause. Jazakum Allah Khair (MAY ALLAH REWARD YOU WITH GOODNESS).

Definitions and Fundamentals:
Saum: Fasting

Fasting teaches us to walk warily, to discipline our inner life, it reminds us of our accountability in this life as well in the Hereafter. The Glorious Qur'an has made it clear that the object of fasting is to create piety among the Muslims. Life is surrounded with thorny bushes of desires, and fasting makes one who is hardy and strong-willed to become better able to face the hardships of life. Nabiy Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Waalihi Wasalam) said,“So, ask your Lord, with pure intentions, for forgiveness of the sins and rectification of evil desires.” The Glorious Qur'an says,“O' ye who believe! seek help with patience and prayer; Verily Allah is with the patient ones.” 2:153

The month of Ramadhan is the month of giving and benefits, which are perceived only by those who perform it with a strong belief and sincere faith.  It also promotes the spirit of charity and compassion towards the poor and the needy, and it reminds each believer of strengthening ties among them and bringing the whole community closer to each other as well as to their Creator. Fasting also has a direct positive effect on a person's psychological, social, and physical being by changing his/her habits and emotional attitude. It makes the one who is fasting hardy and strong-willed to become better able to face the hardships of life. Nabiy Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Waalihi Wasalam) said,“For everything there is a Zakat (purification), and the Zakat of the bodies is fasting.” The Glorious Qur'an says,“There is nothing good in most of their whisperings except (in his) who bideth charity or goodness or peace among the people; And whoever doth this seeking the pleasure of Allah, anon We will give him a great recompense.” 4:114

We pray to able to fulfill all our obligations to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala), and we ask Him to accept our prayers and fasting of the month of Ramadhan and reward us with the best rewards in this life and in the Hereafter. O' Lord, the gates of Paradise remain open in the month of Ramadhan, we pray to You our Lord to admit us through them, Ameen.

Saying of the Month

We praise and thank Allah and we ask Him for help to do good deeds and forgiveness. In Allah we take refuge from the evils in ourselves and from our wrong-doings. He whom Allah guides with His Mercy cannot be misguided by anyone else, and he whom He misguides justly and wisely cannot be guided by anyone else.

AL-KUFA Improvement
Almighty loves those who do good and seek His Pleasure

In all Divine religions, including Islam, wealth and sovereignty belong to the Almighty Lord of the worlds. One cannot hope to gain spiritual perfection and the pleasure of the Creator unless one spends one’s wealth for the less fortunate in the community and for the religion. The Glorious Qur'an says,“A guidance and a mercy unto the righteous one. Those who establish prayer and pay the poor-rate, and they are certain, of the hereafter. These are on the guidance from their Lord, and these are they who are successful. And let not those with bounties among you swear against giving to their kindred, to the poor, and the emigrants in the way of Allah, and they should pardon and turn away (overlook); what! Love ye not that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Mostl-Merciful.” 32:3-5

We welcome any suggestions to improve our programs. For those who are interested and capable of assisting us in translating our newsletter in other languages, we invite them to come forward and support this effort. At the present time, due to limited financial and human resources, the newsletter is printed only in English, except for a small portion that published in other languages.
Each year, Al-Hamdulillah, one of the Mohsineen from Virginia encourage others to come forward and support the cost of the AL-KUFA Newsletter as well as other programs of KCIK, by his example of denoting $3,000, of which $2,000 is earmarked for cost of the AL-KUFA Newsletter and $1,000 for the KUFA Scholarship program, aimed at educating our next generation of Muslims. Thank you brother very much for your kindness and Jazakum Allahu Khairan, may He reward you with goodness for that. This will ease the work for KCIK. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) bless all Muslims who work for Muslims and for the benefit of mankind, and who spend in Allah’s way out of that which He has graced them with, Ameen. O' Lord, record our good deeds and leave us delighted with what they have written down concerning them (good deeds), Ameen. The Glorious Qur'an says,“And Allah gave them the reward in this world and the excellent reward of the hereafter; Verily Allah loveth those who do good (to others).” 3:148

There are many brothers and sisters who continue their support during the year, not only for the AL-KUFA Newsletter, but also for the overall program of KCIK. In addition, many brothers and sisters entrust their Islamic charities such as the obligatory such as (Zakat, the optional such as Sadaqah, including donations for the relief of the needy and the poor as well as for other Islamic causes. It is worth noting that, one brother sent $1 for the AL-KUFA Newsletter from a land in which it is s significant sacrifice to offer that amount. This indicates a dedicate from the heart to support the Islamic mission. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) reward all of our supporters for their good deeds and kindness and may He protect them all, Ameen. O’ Lord, we seek from You succor, protection against straying, correctness of action and Your Assistance, Ameen. The Glorious Qur’an says,“Verily, I am with you; if ye keep up prayer, and pay the poor-rate, and believe in My Nabiy, and support them (with reverence), and lend unto Allah a goodly loan, I will certainly cause you to enter gardens beneath which rivers flow.” 5:12

We would like to encourage our brothers and sisters who have not yet become a part of this good cause to contribute, no matter how small or large an amount. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) multiplies and amply rewards in both lives, Ameen. The Glorious Qur'an says,“Whoever intercedeth with a good intercession shall have a share therefrom.” 4:85 May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) reward all of you for good deeds in this life and in the hereafter. O’ Lord, record for him his good deeds, Ameen.

We also need some technical support and assistance to make this program work. If any brother or sister who is familiar with such programs can offer advice, please contact the Center and may Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala) reward you for your efforts, Ameen. The Glorious Qur'an says,“I will not suffer the work of any of you that worketh to be lost, be he male or female, the one of you being from the other. Then he who hath done an atom-weight of good shall see It.” 3:195 & 99: 7-8 Nabiy Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Waalihi Wasalam) said,“Religion is sincerity. Whoever is anxious to (enter) paradise, he hastens doing good deeds.” The Glorious Qur’an says,“Verily the most honored of you with Allah is the one of you who guardeth (himself) the most  (against evil), verily Allah is All-Knowing, the All-Aware.” 49:13 Jazakum Allahu Khairan. O' LORD, REWARD THOSE WHO ACT RIGHTEOUSLY WITH GOODNESS AND BLESS ALL MUSLIM, AND CONFER UPON THEM OF YOUR RECURRENT FAVORS, AMEEN.
